Our working groups bring together a group of people to focus on a specific part of the Action Plan. The working groups comprise of Technicians, both members of the Technician Steering Committee and non-members, HR representatives, Academics and Managers. Career Pathways Short-Lived Working Group Technical career pathways in the UK HE sector are extremely variable. Challenges include recruitment, retention and clarity of pathways for progression in technical careers. A growing number of institutions have developed and implemented new frameworks to try and address this (see below). Additionally, the UK ITSS has recently established a new Career Pathways Action Group, as part of their Career Pathways Lab, to test new ideas and innovations to cultivate change and improve career pathways for technical staff. In summer 2024, the University finalised its new Technician Commitment Action Plan, including an exploration of how a career pathways framework for technical staff might work in our large and diverse institution. Arising from this, during Technician Week 2024 (September 2024) the Technician Conference focused on technical career pathways, including capturing career pathways of existing technical staff, presentations from institutions who have implemented career pathways and a panel discussion. The TSC have now finalised a terms-of-reference for a new Technician Career Pathways Short-Lived Working Group to move forwards progress on this action. The Working Group's purpose is to advance Action C.1 of the University's Technician Commitment Action Plan. We anticipate the first meeting of the group to take place in early 2025.
