Development Opportunities & Funding

There are numerous professional development opportunities for technicians designed to support personal and professional development and career mobility. Many opportunities are available through the University, external opportunities are also available.

Technician Development Fund (new 2026)

Funding from HR Talent & Development and the Technician Steering Committee is facilitating a pilot Technician Development Fund to support individual and group training and development for technical staff across the University.

All technicians are eligible to apply either as an individual or with a group of technical colleagues. This includes facility-based technicians, research technicians, teaching technicians, animal technicians, GLAM technicians, clinical technical staff, nurses, workshop technicians, and anyone else who identifies as a technician.

Examples of training and development the Fund supports:

  • Attendance at a workshop on an emerging technique or technology
  • Participation in a conference featuring latest developments in the domain of expertise of the applicant
  • Enrolment in a technical or transferable skills training course (examples might include HEaTED courses, UKITSS courses, training provided via professional bodies)
  • Visit to another university or facility to learn a technique or approach
  • Funding to support direct application to AdvanceHE for teaching accreditation (e.g., Associate Fellowship, Fellowship)
  • A group submission to bring an external trainer in-house to train multiple technicians
  • Funding to support staging your own event (such events should have a development focus)
